About Us

Urban Brew is the flagship project of Sector 4 Community Development. It is a coffee shop that doubles as a community center and will be a wholly owned subsidiary of Sector 4 Community Development. The coffee shop will showcase the area as a vital part of Rochester and serve as a model to encourage further investment by showcasing Sector 4's significant potential as a profitable commercial area. Profits from Urban Brew will support economic development in Sector 4 and contribute to the CDC's financial independence.

To complete this project, Sector 4 CDC is partnering with JMJ Coffee Roasters Inc., run by Joe Palozzi (known by everyone as "Java Joe"). There is probably no one in Upstate NY who knows more about coffee roasting, sales, and operation than Mr. Palozzi. He is providing all of our supplies, design assistance, operations advice, job descriptions, and will train our initial employees.

The Urban Brew Coffee Shop is located on the Northwest corner of Brooks Avenue and Genesee Street, in the newly rejuvenated Brooks Village commercial district. This historic former pharmacy is undergoing a complete renovation that will preserve its status as the architectural centerpiece of the district. This building is situated in the heart of the large Sector 4 community and in close proximity to the University of Rochester, making it an optimal business location.

We have purchased and are rehabilitating an historic building to house Urban Brew, and it will feature "student friendly" decor, free Wi-Fi access, a variety of Fair Trade coffees and other drinks, art and cultural displays and programs, and much more. Across the street from our location a complete transformation is now taking place with an 80-room hotel, 4,000 sq ft restaurant, 29,000 sq ft office and retail, boat docks, and boardwalk. This entire development will be completed by the end of 2008.

The Urban Brew Building at 955 Genesee, was a derelict building in danger of collapse when we purchased it in late 2004. Since then we have completely renovated its internal structure with new steel structural supports, roofing and floor systems. It has also undergone certified asbestos abatement. Now that the rehabilitation is complete, we are seeking funding to begin renovation.

Urban Brew is currently under construction. The project completion date is December 2007.
